ecome conversational in bankruptcy in one hour! Are you a lawyer who has never been to bankruptcy court? Or one who only appears there occasionally? Attorneys who only occasionally appear in bankruptcy court say practicing bankruptcy is like speaking a foreign language. And imagine what it is like for a non-lawyer doing business with someone who files for bankruptcy.

In his one-hour “Bankruptcy Nuts & Bolts” webinar, Judge Michael G. Williamson (L'76) gives a primer on bankruptcy law. He covers everything from jurisdiction of the bankruptcy court to sources of bankruptcy law; the “bankruptcy case” and “adversary proceedings”; the structure of the bankruptcy code; basic bankruptcy terminology; dischargeability of debts; the automatic stay; and fraudulent transfers and preference actions in a very easy-to-understand and entertaining manner.

By the time you’re done the webinar, you will have a functional understanding of basic bankruptcy concepts. If you’re a lawyer, you will finally be able to appear in bankruptcy court and advise clients with confidence because you will understand and be able to speak the language. And if you’re a non-lawyer, you will finally have some idea what is happening if someone you do business with files for bankruptcy.

Judge Michael Williamson was appointed to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida (Tampa Division) in 2000. He graduated from Duke University in 1973 and from Georgetown University Law Center in 1976. He began his bankruptcy practice serving as a Chapter 7 panel trustee in 1977. Thereafter, in the following 23 years, he represented numerous Chapter 11 corporate debtors, creditors' committees, and trustees in bankruptcy cases pending throughout the state of Florida. Judge Williamson is past chair of the Committee on Creditors’ Rights, Section of Litigation, American Bar Association; past chair of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar and that section’s Bankruptcy/UCC Committee; and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy.
