Changing profile pictures to advocate for a cause…Accumulating "Likes" on Facebook…Tweeting and retweeting donation requests. Do these actions really help mission-driven organizations further their impact? There are countless recent examples from around the world that show how individuals can have a big impact using their social media skills and influence. But, according to recent Georgetown research, not everyone agrees. In fact, nearly half of the American population says that everybody 'Likes' causes on Facebook today, but it doesn't really mean anything.

Led by Julie Dixon of Georgetown University's Center for Social Impact Communication, this webinar will explore the many ways that individuals involved in grassroots campaigns or working for nonprofit organizations can make a difference using social media platforms. We'll look at examples of what works (and what doesn't!), as well as specific tools and strategies for using your influence to impact the organizations and campaigns you want to see succeed.

Julie Dixon investigates the changing ways we interact with and support the significant social issues facing the world today. As deputy director of Georgetown University’s Center for Social Impact Communication, she is responsible for managing its operations and growing its reputation as a leader in educating and inspiring responsible communicators. Through her research and teaching, Julie works with hundreds of organizations annually, equipping them to more effectively engage people in their work and to share the compelling stories of their impact. She focuses much of her energy on promoting the role of technology in building connections and advancing social solutions.
