Join Citigroup’s North American Consumer Banking Chief Administrative Officer, John P. Carey (C’78, L’83), for an opportunity to hear perspectives on making the transition from law practice to business. John will share his thoughts on how lawyers can successfully move from the practice of law to becoming business leader. As part of this discussion, John will focus on some of the important skill sets that are needed in business that often only executives, trained in law, can bring to the table. There are many paths into business, but one of them can be from the practice of law.

John P. Carey is the Chief Administrative Officer for North America Consumer Banking at Citigroup. In this role, he is responsible for business practices, legal, control and compliance, community relations, public affairs and communications, and regulatory relationship management. Mr. Carey also serves as Chair of the Board of Directors, of Citi’s credit card bank, Citibank (South Dakota), N.A. Previously, Mr. Carey worked in the Citi Cards organization as its Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to joining Citi in 2006, Mr. Carey worked at MBNA and Bank of America, where he held senior positions, including managing segments of the credit card business and covering legal and regulatory matters. Before joining MBNA, Mr. Carey served as the General Counsel to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He also served in the Clinton White House as Chief Counsel to the Office of Presidential Personnel, managing the legal team that vetted candidates for presidential nominations to the U.S. Senate. Prior to joining the Clinton Administration, Mr. Carey practiced law as a litigator for the law firm of Paul Hastings, Janofsky & Walker in Washington, DC. John began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable June L. Green, U.S. District Court, Washington, DC. He is a graduate of Georgetown College and Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC and is admitted to practice law in New York and Washington, DC.
