On your way home from work, you stop off at your local grocery store to pick up some last minute items: milk, OJ, Life™ cereal, Colgate™ toothpaste, Tide™ detergent and Dove™ body wash. While this might seem to be an ordinary transaction you have completed countless times, in reality you are making clear choices. Choices about what brands you value and where you choose to purchase those products are very important to both consumer goods companies and retailers.

Recruiting, hiring and talent management professionals make similar choices about brands they value and where they shop for them to fuel the human capital of their organizations. Supervisors and managers make decisions every day about brands they value and whom to promote to ensure competency in the organization.

Shopping the grocery store can provide a wonderful framework for evolving into a new role in your current organization or making a career change. Hear from Jason Levin (MBA’06), career coach and outplacement consultant at Ready, Set, Launch, as he outlines how understanding consumer brands and retail channels can be a great way for working professionals to define their personal brands and evolve in their own career.
