In the past, many jobs didn't require sales, either literally selling a product / service, or more broadly, persuading people to your idea. You did your job and handed it off and that was that.

Many people absolutely hate the idea of sales. To them it sounds sleazy and manipulative, or full of pain and rejection. They think that good products and ideas "will stand on their own merits" and don't need to be sold.

Nothing could be further from the truth, especially in today's business environment.

Jobs are not as certain as they once were, and you may need to "sell" your way into a job after a lay-off. Employees are being called on to persuade others of their ideas and work with teams in a matrixed environment. And more and more people are becoming freelancers and consultants, who need to ensure that their pipeline is always full of business.

We are all in sales now, whether we want to be or not. Once we accept that fact, we can look at selling from a place of service and integrity. Then, we can master the mindsets and the activities that help us to make a positive impact through our offerings to the world.
